Going On a Sound Hunt… with RYMS and Ryan Powderly

Last week we opened our doors to Drummond Street Services RYMS program, along with producer, composer and all round musical extraordinaire, Ryan Powderly.
In partnership with Ableton, The Push facilitated a creative opportunity to go on a ‘sound hunt’ around our new home at Collingwood Yards.
Drummond Street Services RYMS program is a music and dance mentoring program for young people aged 8-13 years old in Collingwood and Fitzroy.
Combining RYMS expertise in helping young people learn how to write, record and perform their own music, Ryan Powderly put his creative abilities to work with this group of young people in capturing sounds to create a piece of music.
After some introductions and a slice of pizza, the group spent the afternoon exploring Collingwood Yards to locate and record all sorts of sounds. Such things like a ‘short beep’, something ‘other worldly’, ‘crunchy’, ‘metallic’ or ‘tiny’…
Once their sounds had been collected they regrouped to talk about the experience. Now, over the course of the next few weeks, the RYMS crew will continue working with Ryan to produce a beat (or a few beats!) which will later be released online… stay tuned!
The Push welcomes requests from other local community organisations based in Collingwood or Fitzroy who are in need of a space to present youth music programs and activities.
