Tastemaker Blog: September Jams

Check out this month’s newest releases from local up-and-coming artists as curated by Tastemaker Gayatri Chaturvedi!

It’s already September and I don’t remember giving anyone permission for time to travel so fast, in fact to quote Fyre Festival co-organiser & American rapper Ja Rule-

I too was hustled, scammed, bamboozled, hood winked & lead astray.”

But alongside marking the start of spring and the fact that it is now socially acceptable to start playing Michael Buble’s (deluxe) Christmas album on repeat, September does bring with it some incredible musical gifts-so allow your ears to be graced by the following new tunes delivered fresh this month!

Give it/get it by Juno Disco: Living up to their name, the talented duo deliver slick, woozy disco-funk in their latest release, punctuated with dare-I-say the perfect amount of hi-hat action. The shimmery synths and danceable beats bring about the perfect blend of Daft Punk meets Client Liaison. If someone ever decides to throw a beach party on the moon I imagine this would be the ideal soundtrack- extraterrestrial groove and nothing less!

Walk Home by Face Face: With a rebellious spirit reminiscent of the best of 90s’ rock and roll, Walk Home is a gutsy, entirely necessary anthem on the reclamation of autonomy. Ferociously candid and perfectly blunt, the thrashing drums encase the honest lyrics providing the perfect release for pent up pain and angst. I can guarantee, with full confidence, that this tune will leave you pumping your fists in the air and yelling back to whoever happens to be near-by: “wanna walk home alone tonight!”

Day Wind  by Evanda: There’s something charmingly shaggy yet delightfully dapper in this latest tune from Perth singer and rapper Evanda. The jangly syncopated beats carve the tune out to be the sonic version of dappled sunlight sat on a perfectly gelatinous soundscape. The kitsch bedroom hip-hop will be sure to leave you feeling fuzzy and warm inside even on the 10 degree-est of days.

Cool Mind Blue by Great Gable: Cool Mind Blue is exactly the kind of tune I’d have blasting as I stroke my horseshoe mustache and drive off into the sunset in my burgundy 1957 De Ville Cadillac. However, with my inability to grow such a ‘stache and my distinct lack of a Cadillac I guess I’ll have to settle for blasting it in my bedroom as I dream of the aforementioned scene.  A gentle lulling rhythm and twangy guitars make for a lush, psychedelic listening experience, complete with the crowning jewel of the song-the smoothest sax solo you never knew you needed.

The fun doesn’t end there though, wrap your ears around plenty more new releases:

  • Tiny Car by Hannah Blackburn
  • Being a Woman by Sui Zhen
  • Take Me Home by Gosh
  • Sarah Tonin by The Tin Knees
