Music Production Program

 

Curious about producing, song writing, mixing and releasing music? The Music Production Program gives young people from communities underrepresented in music a chance to learn new skills, gain confidence and find their music community. 

In collaboration with Ableton as part of the VicHealth Future Reset initiative, The Push is bringing the Music Production Program to four areas across Victoria.  

The 10 week program music production learning program is an opportunity for young people underrepresented in music production to find their community, learn new skills and express themselves musically in a safe and supportive environment.

 

About the Music Production Program

 

Who’s it for?

The Music Production Program has been designed to give young people aged 14-18 years from communities underrepresented in music production the support and skills to build their confidence and networks. Young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, the LGBTIQA+ community, low-income households, young people living with a disability and First Nations young people are encouraged to apply. 

What should I expect?

  • An 8 – 10 week long weekly learning program where you will learn about how to use Ableton to help you in your music making journey 

  • A free Ableton Intro Licence 

  • Dinner and snacks every night of the program 

  • Presentations by guest artists 

  • A supportive environment to express yourself through music in a small group setting and with one-on-one support 

  • A safe space to build new, practical and transferable skills 

  • Connect with like-minded peers and build your networks in music

  • Join a long list of performers, producers, artists, and music industry practitioners as part of The Push community

  • Financial support is available to help young people access the program. This could cover the cost of travel to and from the program, and address any other barriers to participation. Please let us know what you need once you’re accepted into the program and we will work with all participants to provide support where possible. 

Where and when is the program?

The Music Production Program will be taking place in 2024 across four different locations.

  • Term 1 – The Push Studio – Collingwood Yards
    23 January 2024 – 9 April 2024

  • Term 2 – Youth Central – Broadmeadows
    2 May 2024 – 4 July 2024 

  • Term 3 – Greater Dandenong Youth Services – Dandenong
    8 July 2024 – 20 September 2024 

  • Term 4 – Venue TBC – Shepparton
    23 September 2024 – 6 December 2024 

The program takes place over 10 weeks, including an end of program celebration event. Successful participants will be expected to attend the in-person workshops each week from 4:30pm to 7pm. 

Each term is a single instance of the full program. Participants are not expected to attend more than one term. 

How do I apply?

Applications are now open for all upcoming terms, but must be submitted by the following dates for each term:

  • Applications for Term 1 closed

  • Applications for Term 2 close 5pm AEST Friday 12 April 2024

  • Applications for Term 3 close 5pm AEST Friday 14 June 2024

  • Applications for Term 4 close 5pm AEST Friday 30 August 2024

Accessibility information

Term 1 is taking place at The Push Studio, located within Collingwood Yards. This space has wheelchair access via a lift and an accessible and non-gendered bathroom on the same level. Additional accessibility information about Collingwood Yards can be found on their website.

Term 2 is taking place at Youth Central in Broadmeadows. The space has wheelchair access at the front and rear doors of the building. the whole space is across the ground floor, with accessible toilets.

+ What can I expect on the day?

Each week from 4:30pm – 7pm you will have the chance to learn the ins and outs of music production and song writing with the support of the lead artist mentor, as well as experienced guest producers and artists. You’ll also have the chance to work on a track of your own, applying the techniques you’ve learnt in the session and asking questions to help you enhance your own music practice, increase your confidence, and grow your experience.

+ Where can I find out more about who's leading the sessions?

Term 1 was led by Christobel Elliot. Christobel Elliott is a vocalist, music producer and youth worker with over 8 years of experience as a practicing electronic performing artist. Christobel is one half of electronic RnB pop duo Pillow Pro, and released a solo EP in 2020 called Hail U, as a dedication to her maternal ancestors. Christobel is passionate about the relationship between music and well-being, and is especially interested in facilitating accessible music education for young people. She holds a Bachelor of Psychology, and founded RYMS, an accessible music program for young people which predominantly supports them to write, record and perform.

+ How much does it cost to attend?

It’s FREE! The Music Production Program is free, however there are limited spots available. Each application is carefully reviewed and will be selected by the end of the year. Additionally, participants will receive access to Ableton Intro for free, food will be provided for the sessions and financial support is available upon request to cover travel costs and address any other barriers to participation.

The Music Production Program is delivered in collaboration with Ableton as part of the VicHealth Future Reset initiative.

The Future Reset initiative seeks to provide:

  • Increased opportunities for Young People not currently engaging with the arts to do so​ 

  • The development of new, practical and transferable skills for Young People involved in the creation, development and production of Arts Projects and Activations occurring under the Initiative​ 

  • Opportunities for Young People to have new, increased and meaningful Social Connections ​ 

  • New partnerships between organisations that are not currently working/ partnering together​ 

  • Young people that are more socially connected through opportunities to engage in safe spaces offering meaningful, arts-based activities
