Jakal are a young and exciting six piece soul/funk band who just recently took out first place in the Freeza Push Start Grand Final at St Kilda Fest. Keep an eye on them in 2019 – we reckon they’re about to be the next big thing!

How did you all meet?
Jakal met after all being put in detention together on a Saturday.

When did you start writing songs and making music? How did you get into it?
Jessie and Max had a score to settle with bureaucracy so they wrote 6 songs.

Where does Jakal get the ideas for their songs and do you have a process for writing them?
The process ranges from avoiding the subject of songwriting for months to completing whole songs in half an hour. They used to write through Facebook messenger because they don’t like to see each other in real life, but then the Zucc started copyright claims so they now hole themselves into a 3×3 practice room to get work done.

What kind of things do you like to write about?
Communism, Global Genocide, the Corrupt For-Profit Prison System and Cuckholdery are all topics covered by Jakal’s extensive cry for help. Pretty much anything our obscure youth media outlets preach and things you don’t want to bring up over dinner with your parents. Chuck some vague metaphors, our VCE vocabulary syllabus and a general laziness for rhyme schemes and you have a Jakal anthem.

Who are some of the biggest influences on your music as a band?
Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos… Sam wants to include Bernard Arnault but Imre is religiously against brand clothing. On a good day you’ll catch him in this baby blue short shorts with matching sneakers, a Barry Morgan Tshirt and maybe a Pigalle bucket hat.Max just wants to promote Stock Buybacks but Jessie once watched a Youtube video on Ponzi schemes and is trying to set Jakal up on the legitimate arbitrage of Designer Tires.

What do you like to do in your downtime when you’re not making music?
In our downtime we like to play Monopoly, cut and style Oskar Moore’s hair, plan band outings but not go on them and watch movies up til the halfway mark. This one time we had a Jakal family dinner but we’ve blacklisted that activity.

What would be your dream line up to be a part of?
Jessie: Stevie Wonder
AbbaImre: Brian David Gilbert
Max: Steve Lehman
Sam: Virgil Donati
Kane: Toto

You’ve just taken out first place in the Freeza Push Start Finals at St Kilda Fest. How did it feel to win? What are your plans for the rest of the year?
Winning the Push Start Grand Final was an incredible experience. It felt very rewarding to have all of our passion and hard work pay off. We’re very excited at the possibilities that are now open to us thanks to The Push and all of the people who supported us. It was also so very humbling to hear and meet the other musicians and artists who performed on the day.
2019 will be the year of the Jakal.

Where can people go to keep up to date with everything Jakal?

Our Facebook is the go to place for gigs and music, and our Instagram (@jakalband) has photos of our lovely faces. Alternatively Kane has branched out into avant-garde burlesque theatre… If you want to join his niche clientele you’ll need to regurgitate some Nietzsche and definitely touch up on your Jung…. (Kant hurt).
