This month we chat with up and coming folk/pop singer/songwriter, Chitra. While you’re reading, wrap your eyes and ears around the stunning video clip accompanying her single ‘Better Than Before’.

When did you start writing songs and making music? How did you get into it?

I first got into writing songs when I was around 16. One of my music teachers made the suggestion and I fell in love with it. Before then i was more concerned about my Singstar high score for  “Never Too Much” by Luther Vandross.

Where do you get the ideas for your songs and do you have a process for writing them?

Ideas for my songs usually come to me when i’m feeling a certain way about a situation or just feeling in general. Usually the process is pretty simple where I find chords or a melody and figure out what needs to be said. On good days, it happens easily. But as long as I feel less anxious about whats on my mind, i’m happy.

What kind of things do you like to write about?

All of my songs are quite personal or personal to people close to me, I can only write what I know and found I get the best out of the process that way. A lot of my songs are around the theme of relationships (both romantic and non) which isn’t necessarily intentional but feels the most honest.

Who are some of the biggest influences on your music?

I adore a lot of artists whether its my obsession for girl groups in the 60’s such as The Shirelles and The Supremes or amazing lyricists like Adrianne Lenker. I think we’re also super lucky to have such talented local acts to continually influence myself and others.

What do you like to do in your downtime when you’re not making music?

Read a book, see friends, go to a gig, go for a walk, all the normal mundane stuff. I’m a nana most of the time.

What would be your dream line up to be a part of?

Big Thief, Frankie Cosmos, Marlon Williams. Any of these artists would be a dream to support.

What’s been your highlight so far this year?

My highlight is getting a band together, it’s so nice to get to share experiences with some really lovely people, especially when they let you listen to the whole soundtrack to Dirty Dancing in an hour long car ride. (Thankyou)

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

The band and I will be playing some exciting shows as well as lots of recording, with a release soon to come.
