PushIt! Lab: Road Trip Officially Wraps!
The touring iteration of our hip-hop & electronic music workshop series PushIt! Lab has officially wrapped for the year!
With support from the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust this year we took PushIt! Lab on the road to Sale in Wellington Shire Council and the City of Ballarat. The project aimed to provide young regional Victorians with access to hip-hop & electronic music industry mentoring and equipment in regional areas experiencing disadvantage including a lack of music career opportunities. The project resulted in two mini documentaries, over 5 original songs and countless demos.
During the school holidays in late June and early July our facilitators Memphis LK and Defron visited Sale in Wellington Shire Council. Throughout six days over two weeks 10 young people from around Gippsland were mentored in Ableton production with Memphis and song-writing with local artist Kyso. The project resulted in three original songs “Watermelon”, “Ink Marks” and “Mathematics” with accompanying music videos recorded and filmed by Ioeni Heckenberg.
The second Road Trip saw Memphis LK and Defron joined by local artist EMBE on their visit to the City of Ballarat where they mentored 14 young people in hip-hop and electronic music production & song-writing including Ableton software and hardware. The project resulted in a mammoth group song “Artists Anonymous” featuring 11 vocalists and production contributed by the majority of the group, as well as various separate solo projects.
The Push would like to thank Helen Macpherson Smith Trust for supporting the project, Wellington Shire Council and the City of Ballarat for partnering on the project, The Wedge in Sale and Eastwood Leisure Complex in Ballarat for their fantastic venues, Portside Café in Sale and Free Range Catering in Ballarat for their delicious food and the following individuals for their immeasurable help in making the project a reality:
