PushIt! delivers a diverse range of cultural and community development opportunities for young people with an interest in hip-hop and electronic music.
This year we’re taking our hip-hop and electronic workshop series PushIt! Lab on the road! Throughout the Term 2 and Term 3 school holidays we’ll be delivering a special six-day series of hip-hop and electronic workshops across regional Victoria.
Last year we delivered our first season of PushIt! Lab, a free workshop series for young people teaching hip-hop and electronic production, songwriting and performance. Now we’re taking it to regional Victoria!
PushIt! Lab provides a creative and collaborative space for young people with an interest in hip-hop and electronic music to develop original creative works under the guidance of music industry mentors. In 2018, PushIt! Lab participants in a regional Victorian town will create an original group song and music video!
Road Trip #1 – Sale
Our first PushIt! Lab: Road Trip of the year will be delivered in Sale across the Wellington Shire Council and Gippsland area.
Participants will be guided in electronic production and hip-hop performance with mentor artists Memphis LK (Satsuuma), Kyso and Defron.
In the first week participants will learn the basics of electronic music production and rap vocals, including using Ableton software and hardware. Then in the second week participants will turn their new skills into an original song with an accompanying music video!
Whether you’re already making music and need guidance or are keen but don’t know where to start, this is the project for you!
Week 1: Learning and Writing – July 2 to July 3
Week 2: Recording and Filming – July 9 to July 12
Wellington Centre, 70 Foster Street, Sale
PushIt! Lab: Road Trip is open to anybody interested in making hip-hop and electronic music at any level.
Participants must be aged between 12 and 25 years old and as places are limited to a maximum capacity of 15 participants, successful applicants must be from the Wellington/Gippsland or surrounding areas and be able to commit to all 6 days.

Previous PushIt! projects
Each week up-and-coming hip-hop/rap performers would join the PushIt! crew and rap spontaneously in public spaces, as well as additional special appearances at Sydney Road Street Festival and live on the radio at Kiss FM!
They were joined for the finale by some of Melbourne’ cream of the crop: Sadiva, Fevapres, Fresh Violet, Mista Monk, Muma Doesa, Yung Philly, Class A, Boy Graduate, Emerald and 1/6.
The plan is to continue PushIt! Cyphers in a city near you – watch this space!
PushIt! Cyphers was proudly presented by The Push in partnership with YouthWorx Media and Amped Up Productions and supported by the City of Moreland.
Throughout the Victorian school year PushIt! delivered three terms of its hip-hop school PushIt! Lab, where eleven young up-and-coming rappers and producers learned production, lyricism and song-writing with music industry mentors.
Each term ran for eight weeks at The Push HQ where participants wrote and recorded original works using Maschine, ProTools and production hardware including the SP-404.
In addition to the regular workshop series, PushIt! Lab participants took place at regular performance opportunities including the PushIt! Hip-Hop Showcase at Leaps and Bounds Festival, Malahang Festival, the PushIt! Lab 2018 Finale Showcase at Oxygen Youth Space and the Collarts Sunset Social Series.
PushIt! Lab was proudly presented by The Push and supported by Besen Foundation and the City of Moreland.

Supported by the City of Moreland, The Ledge was the trial term for the PushIt! hip-hop school concept, which has now become PushIt! Lab.
The Ledge was an eight-week series of rapping and beat-making workshops delivered in late 2016 at Oxygen Youth Space in Coburg North.
During the program local Moreland young people developed emceeing skills with Defron and production chops with Sadiva which culminated in an original song recording and accompanying mini music video.
Art of Fresh
Sponsored by the Besen Foundation, Art of Fresh was a four-day program delivered in March and April 2016, developed for young people engaged with The Mirabel Foundation which support children living in kinship care.
During the program, participants worked with industry mentor artists Defron and Miss Minxette to develop skills in rap and hip-hop dance through the recording of and original song and filming an accompanying video clip.
Conducted at Doxa City Camp, The Channel and DSoul and Passion Dance Studios, Art of Fresh finished on Saturday 14 May with a private screening of the film clip where all participants were awarded with a copy of their first song and music video on CD.
Walk This Way
In collaboration with City of Melbourne, Walk This Way was a series of free hip-hop workshops, cultural tours and dinners that invited international students and newcomers to Melbourne to explore Melbourne’s cultural and artistic communities, meet new people and interact through creative means.
Over five weeks in April and May 2016 participants were mentored by Rellik & MzRizk (DJing) , Philly & YVE Gold (MCing), Demi Sorono & Miss Minxette (breakdancing) and David Russell & Caper G (graffiti) in all four elements of hip-hop. As well as partaking in these workshops participants enjoyed tours of ACMI, ACCA, Arts Centre & Hosier Lane and multicultural dinners at Gopals, El Habanero, Panned Pizza & Shanghai Dumpling House.
The project finished on Saturday 28 May with a celebratory jam at Section 8.
