FReeZA Push Start Feature: The Flats

The Flats took out first place at the FReeZA Push Start Gippsland Regional Final on October 11, 2014 in Sale. They will join eight other regional final winners to play at the FReeZA Push Start Grand Final to be held at the City Of Melbourne’s Moomba Festival on Saturday March 7, 2015.

theflatsHi The Flats, What’s the name of your band, who’s in it and where are you guys from? Briefly tell us the story behind your band and how long you’ve been making music and writing songs?

The Flats are a group of five good mates who started playing covers just for fun. Until about 10 months ago when we started writing some of our own songs and recorded our first EP Asbestos in Mark’s granny flat, hence the name!

What are your band’s musical influences? Have they evolved from when you guys first started out?

Our influences vary between each band member. Bands like FIDLAR, Black Sabbath, The Clash and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. We all love listening to each others music and we all bring our own tastes and musical influences to the table.

Which Regional Final did you win, and how was the FReeZA Push Start competition experience for you guys?

We won the Gippsland Regional Final which was held in our hometown of Sale. It was great to have it held where we lived because all of our friends came and it’s always great to play in front of your friends, the crowd got into to it which was sick!

You’ll now be battling it out with eight other bands at the Grand Final at Melbourne’s Moomba Festival 2015 for a pretty sweet prize pack. Which prize excites you most and why?

We are so psyched to play at Moomba! We are looking forward to the experience of it all as a whole. The prizes are sick but for us its all about how much fun where going to have and how sick its going to be playing in Melbourne for our first time!

What were your favourite songs or albums for 2014? What music are you most looking forward to next year?

We played ‘Drunk Mums’ new song Nanganator heaps last year. We Also like King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard, both their album’s last year are so sick. As for 2015 we heard FIDLAR have something coming out so fingers crossed!!

Where have you performed? What are your favourite shows to play at?

We played at the Seaspray Surf Club a couple of times. Also at our local night club ‘Ringers’ once, that was sick. Played at the local music shop as well which was fun because we were at eye level with the audience and it was really tight. Our favourite gig we have played so far was at an 18th birthday in this girl’s back yard. It was so loud! The police were called but they liked it so much they kept on letting us play! Everyone was rowdy, it was sick!!

If you had unlimited amounts of money, what would be your dream gig or tour? Where would it be, who would be playing, etc?

If we had unlimited amounts of money we would go on a massive Australian tour as well as take it to the US and Europe!

What’s the plan for your band in 2015, what will you be doing or working on?

We are really taking 2015 day by day. Hopefully get some gigs and get our EP out there. We have the best time when we are having fun, so as long as we are doing that, 2015 should be a good year!
