Face The Music: Watch session videos online

Face The Music 2015 - Photography by PJ Pantellis (Bigpants Photo) 013 - CopyThe Melbourne sun shone on two amazing days of music, talks, workshops and debate at this year’s Face The Music at Arts Centre Melbourne. A series of live music events from early morning ‘til sunset brought the vibes to the 50+ session program, for the first time in the event’s eight-year history. Across interesting spaces from MPavilion to Testing Grounds art garden, participants were treated to performances from D.D Dumbo, Alexander Gow (Oh Mercy), Ali Barter, Alice Ivy and DJ sets from Null and Habits.

Much anticipated keynote speaker JD Samson delighted all with a surprise DJ set on Friday evening. Opening day two of the conference, JD’s inspiring keynote address looked to her experiences as a musician, producer and songwriter, discussing equality and tokenism.

“Being a token can sometimes feel very solitary and I wanted to make my experience more recognised….Visibility was the best gift that I could give to my community for our future equality,” said JD.

Insights on managing artists internationally and getting your music noticed by influetial music bloggers were shared by industry leaders while delegates lined up for eye-opening masterclasses on social media hacks, grant writing, music publishing and touring.

Ground breaking initiatives for women in the industry over the last 12 months were discussed and applauded in the Hens In The Cock House session.

“Be brave, back yourself, put your name forward. Some actions may not change the world but they may change your world,” said Music Victoria’s Cassandra Pace, summing up the sentiment to the packed room. The National Music Issues Forum provided a platform for representatives from several industry peak bodies to get together and brainstorm a national plan for contemporary music.

A jam-packed two days, thanks to all who took part and supported the event, making it a weekend to remember.
