Artist of the Month: Hot Glue

These Harnath sisters are crunching out heavy emo vibes. Read on to find out more about Hot Glue, our Artists of the Month!

How did you meet?

When Lily was one and a half years old she met Pearl at the hospital, held the infant in her arms and said “Will you join my band?” – We’re sisters!

When did you start writing songs and making music? How did you get into it?

We’ve played instruments and been surrounded by music since we were young, but started writing songs on our own a bit over a year ago. A few months later we started writing songs together. We both started songwriting for a music program called YoWo and then found that we loved playing and writing together even more than doing it on our own.

Where does Hot Glue get the ideas for your songs and do you have a process for writing them?

Usually we’ll bring song ideas to each other, either just a chord progression or a melody and flesh it out together. Sometimes we’ll have some lyrics in mind or start with the music, but we usually aim to write something that makes us want to dance or scream. We find inspiration from our experiences as angsty teenage girls, kind of exploring into identity and authenticity. We use songwriting to figure out what we’re thinking and how we feel; we try to be as honest as possible for that three minutes about everything we feel in a moment.

What kind of things do you like to write about?

We write about relationships, both friendships and otherwise, though usually about our friends. We love to write about things that are difficult to say and use it as a cathartic exploration of our own identities but mask the angst with upbeat guitar solos and whatnot.

Who are some of the biggest influences on your music as a band?

We absolutely LOVE and are so inspired by The Breeders, Courtney Barnett, Alvvays, and Mitski. These artists are huge inspirations to us as fellow female songwriting guitarists. Though these musicians are very rock related, we also draw from the songwriting of artists such as Phoebe Bridgers and Gillian Welch, who write incredible melodies and lyrics which are at the heart of what we aim to focus on.

What do you like to do in your downtime when you’re not making music?

Brunch!!! Also cuddle our cat Knives, see live music, and hang out with our buddies when Pearl’s not at school finishing VCE.

What would be your dream line up to be a part of?

Ryan Adams, Middle Kids, The Killers, Phoebe Bridgers, Courtney Barnett, Alvvays, IV League, Soccer Mommy, Wolf Alice, HAIM, Maggie Rogers, Japanese Breakfast, Lorde. Just to name a few!

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

We plan on releasing our EP before the end of the year, as well as an EP launch, then get stuck into work on the next EP. Also hoping Pearl survives high school. Definitely a few more gigs around Melbourne, too.
